Description:Soldiers of the South Staffordshire Regiment arriving at Lichfield Trent Valley Railway Station from Minden, German, prior to being posted to the Canal Zone in Egypt. Corporal Thompson is pictured here with his mother and young sister.
He is wearing his khaki battle dress and carries both a large and a small pack. The two stripes signify his rank as corporal and the glider badge of the South Staffordshire Regiment can just be made out on his shoulder. This mark of distinction was awarded for the Regiment’s service with airborne forces in World War II and is still worn by the Staffordshire Regiment today.
