Description:This photo shows the cramped back yards of numbers 25 to 27 Hick Street, Newcastle-under-Lyme. These and others on Hick Street were the subject of demolition following the Housing Act of 1930.

The houses had three floors but few windows so it must have been very dark inside these houses. One window has been bricked up and we can just about make out a tiny window on the first floor on the right-hand side of the photograph. Some washing is hanging on a line in the tiny back yard. The walls in the foreground have sharp glass or ceramics upturned on the top to deter unwanted visitors.
