Description:One of a series of views of excavations at the Roman site at Wall which took place between 1912 and 1914. This view shows a carved stone found in what was at the time thought to be a villa. Subsequent research proved the building to be a 'mansio', or hostel. The stone is carved with an image of two horned warriors and a shield, probably from a former Celtic shrine of the 1st century AD. It was one of nine carved stones found during the excavations. The stone had been reused in the reconstruction of the mansio in the 170s AD. This particular stone is in collections of the archaeological museum at Wall, the others are at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.
