Description:An aerial view of St. George's Hospital, Stafford from the north. The town centre is top right. The County Asylum on Corporation Street opened on 1 October 1818, designed by the county surveyor John Potter to accommodate 120 private and pauper patients. It was enlarged several times during the 19th century and continued as a mental hospital until the advent of the National Health Service in 1948 when it was renamed St. George's Hospital. The main buildings Grade II listed closed in 1995 and after a number of years of dereliction have been converted into residential apartments with a surrounding housing estate, and the remaining campus to the east continues to be used for mental health services.
