Description:This late 19th century Russian Sleigh was used with two horses and belonged to the 20th Earl of Shresbury and Talbot of Ingestre. In snowy weather horses would be especially shod for the icy roads. Snow would be a big problem on a country estate and it would in general be too icy for wheeled carriages to get around. The main difficulty with a sleigh is the lack of manoeuverability compared with a wheeled carriage.

This horse-drawn vehicle is from the Staffordshire County Museum collection. You can find out more about the Russian Sleigh and see 3D imaging that you can rotate and zoom in to explore detail at the Staffordshire Carriage Collection website: http://www.staffordshirecarriages.org.uk/russian-sleigh/
