Description:During the coal strike people were reduced to coal picking, finding even the smallest piece of coal that would enable them to heat their homes and cook their meals. Men, women, and children all worked together searching the ground. This was one of the first nationwide strikes that was led by the newly formed Miners' Union, who were demanding a national minimum wage. The resulting coal shortage led many people to go coal picking, as pictured here.
