Description:View of Christ Church from Gaolgate Street, before the Gaol Square roundabout was landscaped. Christ Church opened on Foregate Street in 1839. Its mission church, St. Aidan's, was consecrated in 1902 on Marston Road. Christ Church closed in 1976. In 1983 it was demolished; sheltered housing for the elderly now stands on the site. On the left is the Sheridan Shopping Centre, built in the 1960s. The white building on the right, with bay windows, is Sidney House, which in 2004 houses Cafe Nero. This was the birthplace of Thomas Sidney in 1805. Thomas became Lord Mayor of London in 1853 - 1854. His widow erected a fountain in his memory in Gaol Square in 1889, now replaced by the four-dial clock.
