Description:The last remaining bottle oven at Simon Fielding's Crown Devon Works on Sutherland Street, off Whieldon Road. Dating from the late 19th Century and finally demolished in 1987, the works produced crown Devon Ware. Abraham Fielding patented a downdraught kiln in where the heat, instead of rising up the oven and out the chimney at the top was driven down through the centre of the kiln before rising through the chimney. This design distributed the heat more evenly in the kiln and improved efficiency.
