Description:The first Peak and South Derbyshire Dry-stone Walling Association drystone wall competition, held at Friden Grange, Newhaven, near Hartington, Derbyshire and organised by Mr G.L. Maw. 89 competitors from Derbyshire and Staffordshire took part. Pictured is Mr. William Allen of Flagg, aged 76, the oldest competitor. Participants from Staffordshire included Mr A. Wood of Sheen, and Richard ‘Dick’ Bold and William ‘Bill’ Bold of Narrowdale, Alstonefield. The Peak and South Derbyshire Dry-stone Walling Association was formed in 1937 following a series of classes held by Derbyshire Agricultural institute in the winter of 1936-37 with the aim of reviving the dying art of dry-stone walling.
