Description:The Duke of Devonshire presenting prizes. Next to him is Mr. G.L. Maw (Secretary) and Alderman G.W.P. Bestwick, J.P. of Buxton (Chairman)The first Peak and South Derbyshire Dry-stone Walling Association drystone wall competition, held at Friden Grange, Newhaven, near Hartington, Derbyshire and organised by Mr G.L. Maw. 89 competitors from Derbyshire and Staffordshire took part. Participants from Staffordshire included Mr A. Wood of Sheen, and Richard ‘Dick’ Bold and William ‘Bill’ Bold of Narrowdale, Alstonefield.

Pictured is the Duke of Devonshire presenting a prize to one of the junior competitors. With him are G.L. Maw of Cubley (Secretary) and Ald. G.W.P. Bestwick, J.P. of Buxton (Chairman) of the Peak and South Derbyshire Dry-stone Walling Association Committee. Victor Cavendish, 9th Duke of Devonshire (1868-1938) was Patron of the Association.

The Peak and South Derbyshire Dry-stone Walling Association was formed in 1937 following a series of classes held by Derbyshire Agricultural institute in the winter of 1936-37 with the aim of reviving the dying art of dry-stone walling.
