Description:The second Peak and South Derbyshire Dry-stone Walling Association dry-stone wall competition, held at Mr R. White’s farm at Back o’ th’ Hall Farm, Flagg, Derbyshire. 50 competitors from Derbyshire and Staffordshire built 174 yards of dry-stone wall during the competition. Pictured is the champion, Mr T.L. Alcock of Podel Graven, Buxton, aged 31 years. Competitors in the Open Class had to build 4 ½ yards of wall, 4 feet 9 inches tall. Competitors from Staffordshire included Mr D. Bradbury, Jr and Mr W. Gibbs from Longnor. The Peak and South Derbyshire Dry-stone Walling Association was formed in 1937 following a series of classes held by Derbyshire Agricultural Institute in the winter of 1936-37 with the aim of reviving the dying art of dry-stone walling.
