Description:Women's Army Auxiliary Corps certificate of discharge army form. Rugeley born Gladys Harvey was enrolled on 13 September 1917 and discharged 0n 19 October 1919. She worked as a waitress at Brocton Camp canteen.

The Women's Army Auxiliary Corps began operating in March 1917 as the Great War dragged on. Ongoing shortages of men and soldiers began to impact on Britain's ability to continue the conflict. W.A.A.C.s carried out jobs so that men could be released and enlisted into the Army.

Some of the papers from Staffordshire's Conscription Appeals detail how the majority of men who appealed against their conscription failed in their appeal and were given a short time-frame in which they could get their affairs in order before reporting for duty. Some of the rulings specifically stated that their job could be carried out by a woman.
