Description:This view of buildings in Tipping Street was taken by Stafford photographer Tony Boydon prior to their demolition. Tipping Street has also been named Chipping Street, Dog Lane and The Diglake.
The building on the lower right has the letters NSP over the archway which was used as an entrance to a hall at the rear of the building. The hall is thought to have been used by students from North Staffordshire Polytechnic because it was a good site for the Union Bar as it was half way between the campus at Beaconside and student accommodation in Highfields. It is believed that this building was used as a snooker hall in a previous life.
After most of these buildings were flattened the area was used as a car park and in later years Staffordshire County Council built their Head Quarters, Staffordshire Place, on most of the site. There is still one of these buildings remaining (July 2018) and this is on the left just above the coach.
In the background is the construction site for Stafford Police Station (left) and Magistrates Court (right) which is bordered by Eastgate Street, Cope Street and South Walls. Also in the background is a row of houses (later demolished) forming part of South Walls and behind these houses is a glimpse of part of the former Fire Station which relocated and was replaced by an Asda supermarket, also there is a view of the former Riverside Recreation Centre which moved to Lammerscote Road and site became part of the Riverside Shopping Centre which opened in 2016.
