Description:This is one of seven hand coloured Staffordshire Series Ordnance Survey Maps that show the areas surrounding Newcastle-under-Lyme town centre. You will see that it has been signed in the bottom right corner 'H Elsdale, Lieutenant, 23.10.76'. Henry Elsdale (born 1843) was in the Royal Engineers and did work for the Ordnance Survey. This map shows the Westlands Farm, the rifle butts, Hands Wood and Pie Rough and is roughly where the Westlands Estate is today. The road in the bottom right is the A53 Whitmore Road.
