Description:These maps were surveyed in 1851 by the Ordnance Survey Department in accordance with the provisions of the Public Health Act, for the Local Board of Health.
The index shows the area covered by the maps - the Borough of Newcastle-under-Lyme as it was in 1851 (which is considerably smaller than it is today).

The key shows us the abbreviations used on the maps for certain buildings and features:
