Description:Following the 1909 fire in an adjacent part of the building renovations were made to the Gallery. On the left is a large wall tapestry 'The Virtues Challenge the Vices as Christ begins his Ministry', a Flemish tapestry from the series 'The Redemption of Man' which may have hung in Cardinal Wolsey’s apartments at Hampton Court. In 1910 it was found in a house in Cornwall, it is pictured here at Beaudesert in 1919, and later it returned to its original home at Hampton Court. On the right of the tapestry the Elizabethan mantelpiece was carefully restored to reveal the fine carving and inlay. In the centre panel of the mantelpiece is said to be a Holbein portrait of the founder of the family fortunes, Henry VIII’s Secretary of State, Sir William Paget. The old stone fire arch below was in a poor state and this new one was designed, carved and introduced. Between the tapestry and the mantelpiece the lower portrait is possibly Henry VIII (1491–1547) Hans Holbein the younger (c.1497–1543) (after) and the upper portrait is possibly an Imaginary portrait of Katherine Knyvett (1547–1622), Lady Paget, British (English) School. On the right of the mantelpiece is a large portrait of Katherine Manners (d.1649), Duchess of Buckingham painted around 1628 by Anthony van Dyck.
