Description:Firemen on the roof of a train carriage. In the group of policemen bottom left are Sgt. John Riley (the Sergeant wearing the helmet) who was stationed at Stone, and the Constable on the extreme left without a hat is Constable John Mason then stationed at Barlaston Rural Patrol Unit. The officer to the left of the group of firemen is possibly Constable Bob Stewart.
The rail accident occurred at the level crossing just outside Hixon when the inter-city Manchester to London express hit a lorry. The lorry, which had a police escort, was carrying a transformer to the English Electric depot on the disused Hixon airfield.
The level crossing was replaced by a bridge in 2002.
