Description:Jasper plaques 150mm x 120mm. This pair of blue jasper plaques (on the left) with busts in white relief, depict a woman with her hands clasped and an anguished man. The man and woman are probably Werther and Charlotte from the novel 'The Sorrows of Young Werther', by Goethe (1749-1832), which was published in 1774. The novel mirrored Geothe's affair with Charlotte Buff, a friend's fiancée. In the book Werther commits suicide, but Goethe escaped his problems by running away. The plaques have an Enoch Wood impressed mark underneath. Jasper plaques 150mm x 120mm. Made 1784-1792.
