Mabel Layng was born in Macclesfield but moved to Stafford a few years later. She was the daughter of Alfred Edward Freestone Layng, who was the Headmaster of King Edward VI School between 1883 and 1901.
After 1902 the family moved away from Stafford, and by 1914 they had settled in Ealing, London, where Mabel remained for the rest of her life.
Her paintings show scenes of everyday life in the years following the First World War, and she exhibited at the Royal Academy and other galleries between 1916 and 1928.
