Description:Tithe Maps and Apportionments are invaluable for the history of villages, properties, families, agriculture and landscape in England and Wales in the period 1837 - 1852 . Each piece of land or property has a reference number drawn on the map itself, which is also recorded in the accompanying apportionment or schedule. In the schedule the following details are given: name of landowner and occupier, description of property , acreage and finally amount of rent charge payable. Tithe maps are usually drawn at a large scale of six chains (1 chain = 22 yards) to one inch. The tithe map for Knutton dated 1839 shows how small the village was 150 years ago. To the west of the village the racecourse(2846) is shown, encircling part of the Heath. Silverdale is situated further west. Copyright : Lichfield Record Office B/A/15.
