Description:Designed by John Shaw, this octagonal chapel was built in 1819 in memory of Jesse Watts Russell's father-in-law, David Pike Watts. The memorial itself was sculpted by Sir Francis Chantrey in 1817-1826.

The parish church of the Holy Cross has Saxon, Norman and Early English features and was restored by Gilbert Scott in 1855-1856. It contains the tomb of St. Bertelin or Bertram, who is believed to have spent part of his life living as a hermit near to Ilam. He died in about 710A.D. and was much venerated in Staffordshire during the Middle Ages.

In the churchyard are two Anglo-Saxon cross shafts. A third stands nearby in the grounds of Ilam Hall.
