Date:1962
Description:Looking north-west along Crabbery Street towards Chapel Street. This picture was probably taken in December 1962 during the Christmas lights display, because strings of lights can be seen on the buildings. From left to right: Dewhurst butchers, an entrance to the Market Hall, Baxter’s butchers, Kathleen (unknown), Singer sewing machine shop, later known as Caroline Electric, another entrance to the Market Hall and on the far left is the Noah’s Ark public house which at the time of the photograph was closed. All of the buildings on the left remain (2025) although over the years their ground floors have changed use on several occasions. In the distance on Chapel Street is W. Wood & Son Ltd., grocers, eventually used by County Supplies also called County Woodware which was later demolished.
