Description:Aerial view of Thomas Bolton & Sons Ltd. copper works in the Churnet valley at Froghall. Thomas Bolton & Sons set up a copper works at nearby Oakamoor in 1852-3. By 1890 there was no more room for expansion at Oakamoor so they began building at Froghall. Major extensions followed in the 1930s, and in 1940 Froghall became the company headquarters. The works made copper wire, strip, sheet, bar, rod and tube, as well as machined components for the electrical and engineering industries. The company went into receivership in 2014. Wire manufactured both here and at Oakamoor would form the first Trans-Atlantic telegraph cable, as well as telegraph cables all over the British Empire, leaving Great Britain at Purthcurno in Cornwall.
