Description:Wheatly's Brick and Tile company works was established before the 1820s. The Springfield tilery main entrance was on Newcastle Road in the Springfield area of Stoke. Closed in 1982 and demolished soon afterwards, the works became the site of a retail park. This is one of a series of photographs taken of Wheatly's by a board member of the The Eureka Terracotta and Tile Company Ltd based in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia, taken on a visit to the United Kingdom in the 1950s.
The Springfield clay pits had over twenty "seams" of clay of various types which gave a wide range of natural colours for roof tiles and bricks. Wheatly's were famous for "Triton" brand roofing tiles but also made floor tiles, ridge and ventilating tiles and finials and wall tiles. Staffordshire Blue bricks were made as well as kerb bricks and stones.
