Date:1920
Description:This ancient oak tree, one of a number which formerly stood in Needwood Forest, stood close to Swilcar Lawn Farm near Marchington. It was believed to be over 700 years old when it was uprooted in a storm on 12 July 1941. When it was measured in 1905 it had a girth of 25 feet at five feet from the ground and a height of over 60 feet. The woman seated at its base gives an idea of its size. The Swilcar Lawn Oak was celebrated in verse in F.N.C. Mundy's poem 'Needwood Forest' and by Erasmus Darwin in 1809. Photograph by Alfred McCann of High Street, Uttoxeter.
