Description:Engraving from 'The Antiquities of Athens, Volume 1' by James Stuart and Nicholas Revett. Published in London, 1762. This illustration shows the Horlogium of Andronikos Cyrrhestes which formed the basis of the Tower of the Winds at Shugborough. The ‘Antiquities of Athens’ was written by James ‘Athenian’ Stuart and his colleague Nicholas Revett. It contains detailed studies of five buildings in Athens. Over 500 people subscribed to the first volume. Thomas Anson was one of them and his name is listed at the beginning of the book. Stuart and Revett wanted to increase the number of sources for architectural design, which could then be used to create buildings in Britain. Stuart used two of the buildings in volume one as the basis for monuments at Shugborough. The Horlogium of Andronikos Cyrrhestes and the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates were recreated in the Park as the Tower of the Winds and the Lanthorn of Demosthenes.
