Description:Wills and their accompanying inventories of goods and chattels, are an excellent source of information for family, social and economic history. A will can provide all kinds of useful information about family relationships and the social and economic status of the testator, that is the person making the will. In addition before 1750, an itemised inventory of the goods of the deceased was drawn up by between two and five unbiased persons called appraisors, overseers or supervisors. The inventory includes all the moveable goods, including there appropriate household goods, clothing, stock-in-trade, farm stock, growing and cut corn, loose money and any rent and debts due but it does not include land. “In the name of God Amen I Thomas Hollins of the hazeley thorns in the township of Beech and parish of Swinerton & County of Stafford laborer being ancient & weak, but of perfect memory & remembrance praised be God for itt, Do make & ordain this my last will & testament in manner & forme following, First I bequeath my Soul into the hands of Allmighty God my maker hopeing that through the meritorious death & passion of Jesus Christ my onely Saviour & redeemer to receive free pardon & for giveness of all my Sins, And as for my body to be buried at the discression, of my Executors here after mentioned Item I give unto my Sonn Thomas Hollins twenty pound to be paid at my discease Item I give unto my Sonn James Hollins twenty pound to be paid at my discease Item I give unto my Sonn John Hollins twenty pound to be paid at my discease Item I give unto my Loveing Wife all the remainders of my money, Stock & good both quick & ded of what nature or kind so’ever upon Condition that She shall pay all my debts legacies & funerral Charges And I nominate & apoint my Son Thomas Hollins & John Palin of Beech to be my two executors & to see this my will fulfiled & I do hereby revoke all former wills heretofore made & this to be my last will & testament” Copyright : Lichfield Record Office, B/C/11 1724 Hollins, Thomas Reproduced by courtesy of the Lichfield Diocesan Registrar
