Description:Thomas Amies was Mayor of Stafford in 1889. He is wearing his chain of office.

Born in 1830, Thomas Amies founded the company Amies Ltd., boot and shoe sellers and manufacturers. He started a small business on Gaolgate Street around 1860 and was later joined in partnership by Mr John Tyler, with whom he built a new factory on Eastgate Street in 1880. The partnership dissolved in 1895 and the company became known as Amies Ltd. Under the management of his sons the company opened some 50 boot and shoe shops around the country. He was elected to Stafford Town Council in 1887, served as Mayor two years later, and retired from the Town Council in 1898. He was a Baptist, a Justice of the Peace and was President of Stafford Liberal Association 1891-1912. At the time of his death he lived at The Ferns, Eccleshall Road, Stafford.
