The unknown driver (chauffeur) of the charabanc is wearing a cap and uniform. Charles Hassall is sitting directly behind the man with a bowler hat and among those known to have been on the charabanc are Messer's P Slinn, B Slinn, R Slinn and Kenneth J Slinn. The British Empire Exhibition featured a highly realistic model coal mine. Mossfield Colliery workers and management were significantly involved in the building of the replica mine at the Exhibition Site. This was so that visitors could descend into the mine to experience mine working conditions.
Mossfield Colliery (known locally as "Old Sal") was sunk in the 1850s, with up to four shafts, some were over a quarter of a mile deep, and it closed in 1963. The colliery was located near Adderley Green, Longton, Stoke-on-Trent. The mine produced steam coal for industry such as bottle ovens and household coal. The main seam was the Cockshead Seam, up to 8 feet thickness of "clean coal". The colliery site is now part of an industrial estate.
