Description:An Anglo-Saxon cross-shaft in the grounds of Ilam Hall. It is rectangular with groups of figures and dates from the late 9th or early 10th century. Known as the Battle Stone, it has been linked with the conflict between Saxons and Danes. It was placed in its present situation in the 1820s having been found in the foundations of a cottage in Ilam village. Two other cross-shafts are nearby in the churchyard of Holy Cross Church.
