Date:1919

Description:Group photograph of Stafford soldiers who were all former prisoners of war, pictured alongside some of the civilian members of the local P.o.W. Benefit Fund, who raised money to send parcels and home comforts during their internment.

The photograph appears to have been taken during the winter in a backyard on Gaol Square (where the large traffic island is now situated). The building in the background is the former Stafford Electricity Works which opened in 1895. In later years it was owned by the English Electric Co. Ltd., then by GEC followed by ALSTOM and later GE. During most of their ownership it was used as a High Voltage Test facility accessed from Glover Street. Currently (2026) the building has been renovated and converted into ‘Space Station’ Self Storage Units.

This image taken from a commemorative booklet produced around 1920 to record the names of the Stafford men who served in World War 1 and published locally by J & C Mort.

The original booklet was kindly loaned for scanning by Mr Richard Pursehouse.
