Description:A postcard view of Earl Ferrers CE County Primary School on Station Road, Stowe-by-Chartley.
The school was founded and endowed by Sewallis Edward Shirley, 10th Earl Ferrers (1847–1912) of Chartley Hall in the late 1860s. In 1900, Mr. Daniel was Headmaster and there were 85 children on the school roll. In 1906, it was renamed Stowe Council School. Mr. Prince succeeded Mr. Daniel and he was Headmaster during the Second World War when the school excelled at collecting salvage for the war effort, beating 25 other Staffordshire schools for three years in succession. Mr. Prince was followed by Mr. Lawrence Quick in 1952 when there were 65 children attending.
In later years, it was named Earl Ferrers County Primary School in recognition of the school’s original benefactors. When the school closed in July 1974 there were only 34 children on the roll.
