Description:This board lists tolls payable to Betley and Nantwich Turnpike Trust. People would have to pay a toll keeper in order to travel along the road, paying a different fee for different modes of transport. For instance, a horse-drawn carriage would cost six pence whereas a mule laden with goods cost a penny. The money raised from tolls would be used to maintain the road. The road was disturnpiked when the Betley and Nantwich Turnpike Trust was discontinued in 1877.

This board originally stood at Wrinehill Upper Gate, near the Blue Bell Inn where it was mounted in the lounge bar for many years. It was transferred to the Brampton Museum in Newcastle-under-Lyme when the Blue Bell Inn closed in 2010.
