Description:Looking along Gaolgate Street towards Charles Clark's garage in Gaol Square. On the left is F.W. Woolworth’s store which closed during January 2009. On the right there is a part view of the Midland Electricity Board (MEB) showroom and next door is Aston's Home Furnishers. The garage was demolished in the mid-1970s and the site lies under the Gaol Square gyratory. In the distance the tower of Christ Church on Foregate Street, bu8lt 1837-39, can be seen rising above the garage. It was demolished in 1983. The column mounted four-dial clock dates from 1916 and was gifted by Mr George Bruckshaw of Tillington. It was mounted on top of an existing electric light standard adapted for the purpose. The clock was driven by electrical pulses via overhead wires from the Borough Hall. It was re-sited to its current position in 1980.
