Description:This view was taken on Eastgate Street looking north-west with Market Street on the left and Salter Street centre right. In the background the white building is the Vine Hotel, next is the Stafford & Stone Co-operative Society store with administrative offices above. Centre right by the lamp post is Price & Webb’s grocers shop, previously known as Watkins, Price & Webb, who were wholesale and family grocers and also tea dealers and provision merchants. On the right is The Sheridan, a former hotel and public house which later had several name changes including Dappers, the Wig and Pen, the Forester and Firkin, later abbreviated to the Forester, and then the Theatre Bar which is currently closed. Adjoining is Barber & Woolcock, an estate agent, and the building on the extreme right was later demolished and replaced by offices which have since been converted into apartments. Most of the buildings in this scene remain (April 2025) although over the years their ground floors have changed use on several occasions.
