Description:A view of Greengate Street taken in 1962.

Left to right: the Ancient High House a Grade II* listed building, Brookfield’s tailors, hosiers and out-fitters. Rose & Co. wallpaper and paint merchants, Mac Fisheries a UK retail chain of fishmongers who were at these premises from 1936-1978, Woodall & Company Ltd. drapers and a glimpse of Jenkinson’s which had a cake shop and the ‘Brunch Bar’ self-service café on the ground floor and on the first floor was the Beefeater restaurant.

Most of the buildings in this scene remain (2025) with the exception of Brookfield’s which was demolished in 1965 and replaced by the Bratt and Dyke department store, this later became Court’s furniture shop and currently it is a branch of McDonald’s a fast-food chain known for its burgers and fries. Over the years the ground floors of the remaining buildings have changed use on several occasions. The car is a Morris Minor.
