Description:A view of Greengate Street taken in 1963. All of the buildings in this view remain (2025) although over the years their ground floors have changed use on several occasions. On the left Jenkinson’s Café had a cake shop and the ‘Brunch Bar’ self-service café on the ground floor, on the first floor there was the Beefeater restaurant. Later Currys moved to here from further along the street before moving again to the Madford Retail Park. Clintons Cards now occupy the shop. In the centre Chas. E. Morgan & Son was a Wine and Spirits Merchants, (est. 1780) at 57, Greengate Street. At this time they also owned the 'Chains Vaults' public house in nearby St Martins Place and which is now known as the 'Market Vaults'. Later this was Hilton’s shoe shop and currently it is Waterstones Book shop. On the right is a part view of Jenkinson’s Delicatessen and Bakery shop. This is now a branch of Greggs a chain Bakery and Snacks shop.
