Description:This view Looks north-west along Eastgate Street towards Market Street and Salter Street, Stafford.

On the left is a part view of 79 Eastgate Street, a Grade II* listed building built in 1683 for General John Dolphin. The house was refronted in the early 19th century and a rear wing was added in the late 19th century. It was the Chief Constable's Office from 1891 and from 1977 it became the Registry Office, which later moved to Staffordshire Place and currently (2025) it is housed in the former Judges Chambers in the County Buildings.

Next door on the right is the former Superintendent's House a Grade II listed building dating from 1893. At the time of the photograph, it was used as Council offices and later as an extension to the Registry Office.

Beyond is the Grade II listed Borough Hall dating from 1875-6 which opened on 20 June 1877. It was designed by Stafford architect Henry Ward. The Council moved to new premises in Riverside in 1984. The Borough Hall was refurbished and now houses the Gatehouse Theatre.
