Description:Stafford's Public (Brine) Baths were planned and constructed by the Borough Surveyor, Mr W. Blackshaw. Pevsner stated that the exterior was designed gratuitously by Councillor Wormal. The tender for their construction was not invited until mid-February 1891. They were due to be formally opened on Thursday, 24th September 1891 by the Mayor, William Peach. This plaque was presumably installed in anticipation of the event.
However, on the preceding day, when the bath was being filled with water, in the presence of Mayor, a side wall gave way and the water rushed into the adjacent river. A workman was washed into the river via a window but was fortunately not seriously injured. The opening was delayed until the following April following remedial works.
