Description:Front doorway of Bank House, 40 Greengate Street, Stafford. At the time of the photograph this was the entrance to the offices of Evans and Evans estate agents. In later years the ground floor windows were changed to large plate glass shop windows and a separate doorway, however, the building and this doorway remain and the premises are currently (2025) occupied by Bridgfords Estate and Letting Agents

On the right of the doorway there is a glimpse of the District Bank Limited. Previously, the Manchester and Liverpool District Banking Company had opened a branch in Stafford in 1832, having taken over the Stafford Bank which had been declared bankrupt in 1830. Its first premises, Bank House, were to the left of this building and were later occupied by Evans and Evans Estate Agents. In 1907 the bank moved into this Gothic style building, designed by Mr Griffiths the County Architect. Inside the banking hall was a hammer-beam roof and two elaborate marble fireplaces. This building was demolished in the 1970s and replaced by the National Westminster Bank buildings which later became the NatWest Bank.
