Description:Sidney George Cartwright standing in the doorway of the family jewellers shop at 31 George Street, Newcastle-under-Lyme. Born in 1897 he followed in his father John's footsteps as a watchmaker and jeweller. Between 1921 and 1930 Sidney, his brother John Walter and his sister Annie May formed Cartwright Bros. who ran two shops at 31, George Street and 1, Cheapside. After 1931, John Walter and his son ran the Cheapside shop until it closed in 1989 while Sidney took over the George Street shop and later opened a second shop on Merriel Street and ran them both until his death in 1956.
