Description:Datestone on Brittain's Paper Mill building in Cheddleton which reads 'Brittains Ltd. Anno 1903'. Set below it is an iron plate from early paper making machine inscribed 'Hanley - Fourdrinier Patentees - Staffs'. The Fourdrinier brothers had a paper mill on the Ivy House Estate on the outskirts of Hanley from 1827 which produced tissue paper for the pottery industry on a continuous paper making machine well as ordinary paper. The business was purchased by Thomas Brittain in 1855, and in 1890 his grandson, Thomas Arthur Brittain, and two other members of the family bought a further paper mill at Cheddleton and incorporated the two businesses as Brittains Ltd. Paper making had ceased at Ivy House by 1906.
