Description:Man standing by the mediaeval Butter Cross, near Cheddleton, before restoration. It stands close to Lowerhouse Farm and was restored in 1926 with the addition of a cross at the top of the column

Standing crosses such as this were used as places for preaching, public proclamation and penance, as well as defining rights of sanctuary. Standing crosses could also mark boundaries between parishes, property, or settlements.
