Description:Dorothy Irene Dodd, known locally as 'Duckie' Dodd, poses as Lady Godiva as part of the Stafford Infirmary Pageant of 1930. 'Duckie' was well known for her impressive costumes at the annual Stafford Pageant, with each year's entry the subject of local anticipation! Born Dorothy Madeley, she married Percy Dodd at Stafford in 1916. After their marriage they lived on Chapel Terrace. She entered the fancy dress competition in the annual pageant for many years, being crowned Pageant Queen in 1928. In gratitude for her significant fund raising over many years Stafford Fire Brigade made an arch of fire escape ladders, entwined with laurel leaves, in Market Square for her to process through. According to legend, Lady Godiva rode naked through the streets of Coventry, covered only by her long hair, to gain a remission from the oppressive taxes that her husband Leofric, Earl of Mercia, had imposed on his tenants.
