Description:Workmen standing with a Roman column. A Roman villa of the 2nd to 4th century AD was excavated in summer 1937 by Wolverhampton Archaeological Society with the support of Kathleen Kenyon. The site is about 500m south of Watling Street near Engleton Hall, on the east bank of the River Penk. This metre high column was found in a pit in the courtyard. It was moved to Engleton Hall Farm where it forms the base of a sundial. Other finds from the dig are at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.
At the time this site was thought to be part of the Roman settlement of Pennocrucium, but this was confirmed by aerial photography in 1946 on a site straddling the A5 Watling Street.
