Description:John Tasker Evans appears in local directories 1863-1880 at 34 Gaolgate Street, Stafford. In 1870 he is also listed as Cornfactor, Correspondent of the Birmingham Post and Global Parcel Express Agent. During the 19th century it was common for publicans, licencees and shopkeepers to issue their own tokens or 'checks'. Most of the checks issued in Staffordshire were made by Birmingham and Black Country diesinkers and stamping workshops. They could be spent on goods sold at the named shop, and they also served as advertisements for the business. Copper alloy token, no value. Obverse: 'GEORGIVS III DEI GRATIA'. Profile of King George III. Reverse: 'J. TASKER. EVANS. STAFFORD. FREE TRADE. PROVISION MERCHANT'. Crowned shield in centre of token. Edge milled. Hole punched through token.
