Date:16th of April 1961

Description:A view taken from the top of Oakamoor Tunnel, looking towards Alton. Botton left is the crossing keeper's house with the terrace of housing built for Bolton's copper workers known as The Island. Oakamoor Station buildings and the Churnet Valley Line are featured.

Photograph from the H.B. Oliver colletion.

John Williams provided the below additional information:

"These houses now known as 'The Island' were actually built by the NSR which is perhaps why they survived the mass demolition of all the Thomas Bolton owned housing/cottages and Works in that area of Oakamoor in the mid 1960's. Most of them were inhabited by workers at the Bolton Works."
