Description:Captain (later Lt. Col.) Henry Courtney Brocklehurst (1888-1942) of Swythamley Park pictured in France with the 10th Hussars in about 1916. While serving with the Hussars, Courtney was invited to join Shackleton’s 1914 Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition. Leave was granted by the War Office, not on the basis of a secondment, but by Courtney being placed on the half-pay list, and he set off on the Endurance for Buenos Aires, but this appears to have been revoked, due to the outbreak of World War I. He later transferred to the Royal Flying Corps, serrving in Palestine and Tanganyika.

Courtney Brocklehurst set sail on the Enurance on 1 Aug 1914 from London. By the 3rd they were anchored off Margate and France declared war. The next day Britain declared war too. Shackleton offered the ship to the admiralty but they declined. He also said anyone was free to leave so Courtney and another officer (Lt Dobbs) did so. As the 10th Hussars were still in South Africa Courtney joined the 5th Dragoon Guards for a while and saw action at Mons. He rejoined the Hussars in November after they had arrived in France. He was killed in action in Burma in 1942 during World War II.
