Description:This book is the oldest book in the museum archives and details the official minutes of Newcastle-under-Lyme Corporation.

The language used in this book is Latin.
Latin was considered at the time superior to other languages, and it was used primarily in written language especially by the Church and in official documents.

English at this point was primarily spoken by the lower class or peasants (that made up the majority of the population), thus monarchs and nobility spoke a version of Anglo-Norman French to form a division between the classes.

In 1399 Henry IV took the throne as the first king since William the Conquer who spoke English as his first language.
