Description:During the Edwardian era women’s fashion altered to be less restrictive than previously seen in the nineteenth century. Informal day dresses started to become more popular and were suitable for visits from close family and friends. This dress is a prime example of a day dress, as the structured style of the dress allows it to be worn without a corset and the assistance of a maid. The high neckline and long sleeves illustrate that this dress would have been acceptable as afternoon wear for informal visits by close friends and family. This type of day dress was the first step in 'dressing for comfort' that would occur after the First World War and when women stopped wearing corsets altogether. Details: The dress is lined in pink fabric with an extra frill to the underskirt hem. It is smocked at the wrist, waist and top of bodice. It is fastened down the centre back of the dress with cloth covered buttons and rouleau loops also some snap fasteners.
